It's been a rough few weeks for me, that's for sure. I really did think, when I posted that last one, that I'd be able to come back. I had managed to get my cell signal dialed in enough that I was getting about 2mbit (which, compared to what the majority of you have, is still horrible) and then the next day *poof* ... totally gone. It was back to the 0.2mbit speeds, which for comparison that was what we had for "broadband" in 1999, and even then that was considered slow because in the neighboring city you could get 2mbit.
I fought with the antennas a bit more and since the last antenna/s I bought didn't really turn out as good as the ones my modem came with, I decided to buy two new ones. The ones that came with the modem, if you needed to get new ones they cost like $10/ea (there are 2), so they're nothing fancy. The next one I bought was one unit with 2 antennas inside, and it was a bit more at $40ish, which in any other situation might work quite well but not where I live. Then a couple weeks ago I bought two more, nothing big or expensive but their specs looked decent. Since then I had been trying to find a position and spot where they'd pick up good signal, and while I may have been able to, my speeds still are bad... and actually slightly worsened, where I now get between 0.1mbit to 0.18mbit *sigh*
Needless to say, in light of everything else, this has been extremely stressful and basically un-doing the stress I managed to get rid of while I was on sabbatical. Which... this stress may have influenced my decision making a little, but I was desperate and am at my wit's end... So yesterday, in the midst of my stressed-out stupor, I said "screw it" and spent $218 on two big-ass antennas. As a comparison, the last ones I had gotten were about 8inch tall, and these ones are 40inch tall. And no, they will not be inside my house, as all my equipment is setup outside lol (which is another factor that makes this all such a pain in the butt heh)
They aren't scheduled to arrive until around Tues or Weds of next week, and even then it'll take me a couple more days to once more try to sort out the ideal placement of them. While I am still hopeful I can get this rectified, if these aren't able to sort out my issue, I really don't know what I'm going to do...
As for those who aren't really able to follow what all of this has to do with Minecraft, at the speeds I currently have, all I'd really be able to do is sit in chat. I wouldn't be able to build, I definitely wouldn't be able to TP to anyone to sort out issues, because even when I had 0.5mbit it sometimes took me over a minute or more to TP to a player (assuming I didn't get disconnected in the process, or worse, glitch out where chat doesn't progress and anytime you try move your screen springs back). At the end of the day it does nothing but frustrate me even more (increasing stress), since I'm basically helpless, so that's why I've been been on. Once again, I apologize to everyone. My internet situation is directly causing me to fail as an owner, not to mention having cost me over $1000 over the last couple years as I continually get new (better) modems, routers, antennas, cables... and in the end it's been all for nothing.
Keep your fingers crossed and I'll hopefully see you all soon!
