Err... Union Update. That's better!
So after a long time waiting for some plugins to update, and a long time waiting for replacements to ones that ceased to exist, and a longer time of having problems getting one of them re-configured to work like it did in 1.8.... PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE! Last Friday is when thing finally started to come together and all the changes in the plugin were figured out, allowing me to get Magic functional again (which was what held us back lately). This past week I went through to make sure the spells were properly updated for other small changes, mostly just sounds since Mojang changed things up since 1.8. After that, we sorted out a couple other plugins that had updates and began erroring, so they're good now.
I had hoped/wanted to gather a few of you to log on there and test things out, but Nyx is feeling under the weather at the moment, so that will get put off for a couple days. In the meantime I'll continue hammering out the remaining config changes in preparation for that trial run.
To reiterate points made on the initial update post, or state for the first time, here are the major noteworthy changes:
- The End will be reset! As mentioned before, if you have a home out there with anything in chests... better get that now while you still can! This needs to happen though, as it's from 2013 and originally generated on v1.5 or something, and I want to make damn sure that all the new goodies generate properly. (Of course, any server-builds out there will not be deleted. They'll be backed up, and then copied over.)
- Pegasus unfortunately will become extinct. All is not lost, though, as they will be replaced with Elytra that function similarly, with tiers and "fuel tank size" based on the tier! They'll allow you to "blast off" from the ground and fly around :D
- Skylands was another issue, and was the initial problem we had with 1.10 way back when. We did find a replacement, after like a year... It's pretty much the same plugin, but due to minor coding differences means the generator isn't 100% identical. As such, you may run into places that players call "chunk errors" (not actually errors) with vertical cliffs suddenly in the landscape. Thankfully this doesn't harm Skylands much as it is mostly space at times. I just wanted to make that fact known, though. HOWEVER; there's a chance that we might start to use a premium Skylands plugin in order to expedite updating to 1.11 and 1.12, so that we aren't stuck with a world that will cease to generate. IF we end up using it, then the "chunk error" places will be far far more noticeable and likely a lot more numerous, BUT that is a small price to pay because Skylands will generate with FAR cooler islands and have customizable elements like trees. In other words it'll look like a mod-generated world, despite still being all vanilla!
Lastly, when it comes time to update, we will be taking the server down for a few days in order to make sure it goes smoothly. In the past I've said "it shouldn't take too long to make a backup, and install the new files" and it then ends up taking around 20hours due to some unforeseen snafu. This time, the server is far larger than it was when we changed to 1.8, and as you may or may not know, our main map is also from 2013.... it alone takes up more hard drive space than most servers are given by their providers, three or four times over! Not only that, but there's the Nether, which is also as old (and I'd seriously love to let regenerate as well... personally). Combine those two maps, our multi-year old CoreProtect database which is an impressive 52GB (2x larger than any other I've heard of!), many 10s of thousands of user files, in multiple plugins, all means that the backup will take a lot of time. When we updated to 1.8, that was a Compressed Archive backup, but since we have a few TB of space to utilize I'm just going to make a 1:1 copy. This will greatly speed up the time that'll be needed, but I still estimate that to take well over 12 hours! That is why I'm planning that it'll be down for a few days, so that I don't feel rushed, and don't have to apologize for any problems that may turn up.
Granted, this is my own doing, but I enjoy when players come back and see that we've kept their homes and everything they owned intact. I know a lot of you spent countless hours acquiring your gear or building the various things you have, and it's always been my goal to provide a place where we don't lose our stuff due to one reason or another. Meaning you can fall off the face of the Earth, but eventually find us again, and pick up where you left off, as we've had many many players do! :)
Sorry it's taken so long, but thanks for sticking with us on 1.8 regardless! With any luck we will have 1.10.2 soon, but with even more luck, we might (slim chance) go right into 1.11! I don't want anyone to get their hopes up, but I do plan to see what all breaks again when loading it all with 1.11. Lots of plugins have 1.11 and even 1.12 support, so we may get lucky :P
and the rest of CL's fine staff!
